The Abersoch 10K is a race that hypes up the village creating an ambience of nerves and excitement. Whether you are putting on your running shoes or simply supporting the competitors the atmosphere makes the 10K one of the unmissable events of the summer.

The third annual Abersoch 10K took place on Saturday 4th of June and with no exaggeration was a sweltering hot day.  The morning started early with a flurry of activity to start setting up the event on the beach, with official Race Control then opening at 8.30 am for the 3K and 10K competitors, with the little eager beaver racers running the 1K and 2K already having earlier picked up their race numbers.  The heat was rising already and nerves were building with a few 10K runners eagerly waiting for the Race Control to open to get on with their warm ups.

The charity chosen for this years race to support was the RNLI due the amazing work Abersoch Lifeboat team carries out, and their need for continued monetary support from the public to enable them to do what they do.  A brief history of the work that the RNLI has done in Abersoch, which the team is made up of local volunteers who are trained and dedicated to sometimes life threatening work, include having rescued over 830 people since the station was established in 1869.  Last year the lifeboat was launched forty times and rescued 63 people with five of these launches carried out in darkness.  So as another busy summer comes around, with hundreds of people out in their boats and hitting the beach, this money includes going to needed causes such as keeping the equipment up to date and working, an expensive task with the cost of kitting out a RNLI crew member being £909.  On a broader scale the average running costs of an inshore lifeboat station such as Abersoch’s come to around £90,000 per year, so every penny is appreciated.  Resident of one of the St Tudwels Island and TV personality Bear Grylls admires the work that the RNLI does and when asked about the 10K race supporting this charity this year he states ‘A fun, but very tough challenge for those who want to help the brave volunteers of the RNLI to save lives.  I am, of course, the RNLI’s No.1 fan!’.  And as their No.1 fan we’re hoping to see Grylls taking on the 10K challenge in next year’s race, so get training Bear!

With a congratulations to all runners that took part we would also like to thank all the volunteers that helped out to make the 10K 2011 happen, with thanks also to the sponsors RbK, Powerade, Wombat, Running Free, Championchip, Robinson Family Brewers, Mick Hall Photography and special thanks toW&G Williams for their continued support.
